The Independent Living Agency (ILA) will assist disabled people who choose to employ their own personal assistance. The ILA will provide information, training and support which will enable them to have physical and psychological independence in order to live in the community with more choice and control over their lives. This choice and control is fundamental to independent living and the basis on which the ILA is formed. To support disabled people to live in the community and exercise choice and control in their lives.
Independent Living Agency is a registered charity and non-profit making organization. We are a service user led organization established in 1996 by a group of people with impairments with the purpose to support people receiving Direct Payments. We initially received funding to support only 4 people in Barking and Dagenham and now we support over 1500 people in the local area. We still hold our core values; we are run by disabled people for disabled people. Over the years we have taken on many different projects with the aim to empower people with impairments. Our Choices Project started in 1998 with the purpose of supporting people to live independent lives in their own homes which later evolved on to our Floating Support team. Over the years we have added other services in response to our client’s needs. This is how our accessible transport scheme and our equipment supply service started. We also run a successful cleaning and blitz cleaning service. We moved all of our services under one roof in the present premises, in January 2013.
